The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and to provide for those who grieve in Zion to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair…..

– Isaiah 61:1-3

The above excerpt, is a prelude to all of us that we do not do things that are of lasting impact by our own might but by the spirit of the Lord resident in us. In Luke chapter 4 when Jesus had visited a synagogue in Nazareth, he was given a chance to speak and he read this very passage and proclaimed that it has been fulfilled. He was almost killed by the people but God rescued him.

The spirit of the sovereign Lord was on him because the lord had anointed him to do these things. That was his mission to on earth but also through the Lord’s sovereign spirit he has given it to us. John 20:21- Again Jesus said, “peace be with you! As the father has sent me, I am sending you.” He sent us with the same anointing and mission he had.

The anointing is upon all of us. It is divine grace, favor and enablement to do things we could not do by ourselves. It makes us access certain things and rights. It grants us access to God through the side door where one without cannot gain admission. God’s anointing is an all access entry to Him and his benefits. When the anointing of God falls on us, it calls us to serve one another.

The spirit of the Lord has anointed you to position you for impact. It will add to what you already have if wisely used. The anointing is to use our gifts in service of others and not to our own devices and manipulation to be served. This is what the anointing is for, for Jesus himself said the spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to do these things to seven categories of people;

  1. Serve the poor

He has sent me to preach the Gospel to the poor. He was talking about the poor of the poor. The poor are usually receptive to the gospel as opposed to the rich who rely on the appliances, credit cards and lines that they have. For us, it is time to preach the good news to the poor and the poor in spirit. For some of the rich are very poor in spirit. Go out of your way and get out of the way to speak to someone about the gospel to which we are to.

  1. To bind-up the broken hearted

Some hearts are broken in our midst through the vicissitudes of life. We have in our midst people with broken hearts because of divorce, rejection by parents, boyfriends and girlfriends failed businesses and they are walking with fallen countenance. When you have the anointing, you can tell the state of one’s heart and that calls us to bind up those with broken hearts. Some of us were once broken and God healed us- therefore its incumbent upon us to become ‘wounded healers’ for we know how it felt to be where these people are. we should not just be a church that receives for our own benefit, but pass on the same to others.

  1. To proclaim freedom to the captives

The anointing sends us to proclaim freedom to the captives. Those exiled from home where they feel loved. They do not have the freedom the rest have. They have been banished by society only because they are alcoholics, homosexual, pornography and drug addicts, and so on. They are in our midst but are refugees in their own land. Yes, whatever they are involved in is sinful, but we must be careful not condemn the person but the sin in the person.

For the church that truly worships Jesus Christ should be a hospital of the captives and not a museum of the saints. The spirit of the sovereign lord has anointed us to proclaim freedom to all captives. None of us are good the bible says, it is just by the grace that we partake of the good that Jesus offers.

  1. The prisoners in darkness

When this people are set free they cannot even see well. They have been in a dungeon and everything around them is warped. They are victims of slavery, sexual abuse and so on. They cannot see well and so we must embrace the anointing and proclaim to these people that they are free. God can use you to release others in prisons that we know. Those the society has neglected.

  1. Bring comfort to those who mourn

Some in our midst have lost their loved ones and significant others, limbs in accidents and fires have raged their homes through post-election violence, some are orphans and they lost their businesses. The anointing is on you to encourage them through these situations. Maybe you know programs that can help them that they are aware of. Step out and be of service to these brothers and sisters.

  1. To those who grieve in Zion.

Zion is the church on the hill. It is God’s habitation. Everybody thinks that those that are in church and serving are strong. They might put up a face but they are in grief. The spirit of the Lord helps you to know that a safari group leader is mourning, an elder is in mourning, a pastor is in mourning that a Sunday school teacher is in mourning. We are to provide for those who are in mourning. It could be a financial aid or encouragement-help them even while they are mourning right in the presence of God. We must be sensitive to the spirit to provide comfort for those grieving in Zion.

When you listen to others in distress, and give them comfort your problems diminishes, because we are called to serve one another and the anointing we have received is about service.

  1. To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor to others

This is not addressed to any group of people but to all of us. It is the year of God’s favor and recompense. Favor because he delights in blessing us, but recompense because he says vengeance is mine. You and I cannot continue to rip-off God’s people. You cannot keep on taking advantage of your students, you cannot continue to deny people jobs because they are not from your tribe, you cannot keep on stealing resources from the needy.

You cannot keep on cutting queues like other people have nowhere to go. You cannot continue to take bribes to expedite a transaction, you cannot keep on stealing land from your relatives just because you know someone in lands office. You cannot refuse to pay for work done just because you work in government office. God’s favor is coming but in tow is his recompense.

I hope no one here is practicing any of these things because the anointing of God’s favor is coming and so is recompense for his people. God will not forget you forever where you have been mistreated. All you are asked is not to be the one to mete out judgement.

In Mathew 9:36-when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd.

If you want to see God use you, ask for the spirit of compassion. Before you take a long trip to some far-off destination, how about your neighborhood, your work place, your get-together meetings, how about your family members. The anointing is not for show or to look big, the anointing is given for those who stay up late to minister to others, those who pray and weep for those they seek to turn to the Lord. It is given to those fasting because divorce is increasing and it is given to those who labor to give dignity to the those ‘discarded’ by society.

Those who feel the pain of the ills bedeviling our society. I hope you will position yourself and among all things seek compassion from the lord so that you will say like Jesus Christ, that the spirit of the lord has anointed me to help people.
